HEPA vs ULPA: Fundamental Differences
HEPA Filters (High Efficiency Particulate Air) - **Efficiency:** 99.97% for particles ≥0.3μm (H13) or 99.995% (H14) - **Applications:** ISO 5 to ISO 8, hospitals, pharmaceutical, medical devices - **Cost:** Moderate - **Typical lifespan:** 3-5 years
ULPA Filters (Ultra Low Penetration Air) - **Efficiency:** 99.999% for particles ≥0.12μm (U15) or 99.9999% (U16) - **Applications:** ISO 1 to ISO 4, semiconductors, nanotechnology - **Cost:** High (2-3x HEPA) - **Typical lifespan:** 2-4 years
When to Use ULPA?
ULPA filters are only justified when:
- ISO classification requires sub-micrometer particle control
- The process is extremely sensitive (semiconductors, precision optics)
- Specific regulations require it
The Reality for Most Industries
For pharmaceutical, medical devices and hospitals, HEPA H14 filters are sufficient and more cost-effective. An HEPA H14 with 99.995% efficiency covers ISO 5 to ISO 8 requirements.
Sinergix Recommendation
In most of our projects we use HEPA H14 filters. We only recommend ULPA when technical requirements specifically demand it. Filter selection is defined during technical specification, based on your process and regulatory analysis.
